The diagnostic

Having a relative with cancer is like living at an emotional roller coaster and the first big drop is when the doctor tells you: "it might be cancer, we need a biopsy". There comes the doubt, the fear and you need to take your first fast decision: try to look relaxed and show all your support to your relative.

During the week that we had to wait the hospital to give us the result diagnostic from my Mom's biopsy, I used to ask myself "what if the diagnostic is really cancer? How would the treatment be? What should I say? What should I do?" and I didn't sleep because I was afraid that my Mom's body would give up to the cancer and that she would be dead in the morning, so I used to check her breathing at midnight and early in the morning.

Time passed and I volunteered to pick up the results at the hospital to bring the exam results to my mom and her doctor. For any reason, which I'll never know, when the nurse opened the document in her computer I was able to read on her screen the diagnostic: LEUKEMIA. In that way, the whole text with capital letters so I took the closed envelope and went out from there.

In my mind, my questions appeared again: "now what? What should I do? What should I say?" And started to cry at the same time I called my best friend to help me. He calmed me down, helped me take deep breathes and gave me all his love so I could find courage and go to the doctor's office. There she explained us how would be the treatment.

My mom looked so healthy and as lost at her questions as me so I didn't cry. I just showed myself so brave and ready to help and support her during this journey we were beginning and during which so many people joined and just a few left us.

To the patient and her or his relatives, the worst you can do is say: "I'm so sorry about this" because it's like if you were telling them that everything will go wrong, before the treatment starts so it's better if you show your support with a hug, few words and a gesture or even stay silent while you are with them so you will create an special trust link.
